Island Conservation’s work to holistically restore island-ocean ecosystems around the world is only possible thanks to the support of island champions—people who care deeply about the future of islands and want to turn that passion into action. Our supporters are as diverse as the islands where we work, and by highlighting their stories, we hope to give you a sense of the community you can join when you become an island champion! Today, we’re featuring Balbi Brooks, who was born and raised in Hawaii and whose deep bond for the Pacific and its ecosystems guides her affinity for Island Conservation.  

For Balbi Brooks, connecting with people, cultures, and the stories that shape our planet’s islands is the core of conservation.  I got the chance to talk with her about her recent journey to Samoa, guided by Island Conservation’s Grace Young-Grey, where she got a hands-on opportunity to deepen that connection. 

Supporting Island Conservation is a no-brainer, Balbi reflects, speaking of the passionate conservationists she’s met. “They’re so enthusiastic, and they work hard, and they show up,” she told me. When talking with our staff, it’s easy to share their enthusiasm and commitment to our work!  

With Grace as her guide, Balbi explored the Robert Louis Stevenson property, marveled at the local flora. What stood out most to Balbi was the sense of shared purpose among conservationists and island communities. Whether in Samoa or elsewhere in the Pacific, she’s consistently inspired by the dedication of those working to protect their environments. 

“Just knowing that there are places where people are trying to protect the environment—it’s really hopeful,” she said. “It feels good to know that they’re out there doing it.” In a world of increasing threats to the natural world, Island Conservation’s success in holistic restoration for island-ocean ecosystems around the world is a breath of fresh air. 

When I asked her what message she had for the rest of the Island Conservation team, she said, simply, “Keep on doing the great work.” By being a staunch advocate for us, she helps restore and rewild islands around the world.
