[Español] ¿Cómo ha impactado el proyecto Franklinia la educación ambiental entre los residentes del archipiélago Juan Fernández?

El proyecto ha permitido profundizar de distintas formas la conexión de la comunidad con el bosque endémico. El proyecto permitió trabajar con distintos públicos, siendo uno de los mas significantes el trabajo realizado con los adultos mayores, llevamos el proyecto a sus espacios y capacidades.

Además, este mes celebraremos por segundo año consecutivo el “Desafío Neriifolia” que consiste en una media maratón dentro de una ruta que pasa por la última Nerrifolia en estado natural. Actividades que hablan de actividades que se van enraizando en el valor de nuestras especies en riesgo.

[English] How has the Franklinia project impacted environmental education among the residents of the Juan Fernández archipelago?

The project has deepened the community’s connection to the endemic forest in multiple ways. One of the most meaningful achievements was the work with older adults—we brought the project into their spaces and adapted it to their abilities, ensuring full participation.

This month, we will also celebrate the second edition of the “Neriifolia Challenge”, a half marathon that passes by the last naturally occurring Neriifolia. Activities like this show how threatened species are becoming part of the community’s cultural identity.

[Español] ¿Hubo algún momento o historia específica que te haya tocado el corazón?

Hubieron varios momentos que me emocionaron pero el que más me quedó en el corazón fue en la última plantación que tuvimos del proyecto, se hicieron invitaciones abiertas a la comunidad y en la medida que nos íbamos acercando al lugar de las plantaciones nos íbamos encontrando con mas y mas gente. Finalmente al llegar al punto de encuentro la instancia logró reunir una cantidad importante de voluntarios para realizar la plantación; niños, adultos mayores, jóvenes y adultos. Fue mágico.

[English] Was there a specific moment or story that touched your heart?

There were several moments that moved me, but the one that stayed closest to my heart was during the last planting we had for the project. Open invitations were sent out to the community, and as we got closer to the planting site, we kept encountering more and more people. Finally, when we reached the meeting point, the gathering managed to bring together a significant number of volunteers to carry out the planting—children, seniors, young people, and adults. It was magical.

[Español] ¿Cómo ha cambiado el ecosystems?

Hay un lugar en particular que se intervino donde he podido observar cómo nuestros plantaciones están siendo capaces colonizar espacios donde antes estaban siendo invadidos por especies exóticas invasoras. Asimismo, hemos notado que, al trabajar con parcelas de exclusión de ganado y conejos principalmente, en su interior ha habido regeneración natural, siendo una señal de esperanza para todo el trabajo que se hizo y continuamos haciendo.

[English] How has the ecosystem changed?

There is a particular place that was restored where I’ve been able to observe how our plantings are now able to colonize areas that were previously being overtaken by invasive exotic species. Likewise, we have noticed that by working with grazing- and rabbit-exclusion plots, natural regeneration has occurred inside them, which is a hopeful sign for all the work that has been done and that we continue to do.

Wow… Que difícil, me declaro una fans de todas nuestras especies, es que realmente son hermosas. Ahora, si es por elegir sería la Lactoris fernandeziana Phil.

[English] This one’s personal! What’s your favorite native tree species in Juan Fernández and why? What makes that species special to you?

Wow… How difficult. I call myself a fan of all our species—they are truly beautiful. Now, if I have to choose, it would be Lactoris fernandeziana Phil.

It’s a true living fossil!!

[Español] El proyecto Franklinia ha sido un esfuerzo colaborativo increíble. ¿Qué miembros del equipo te gustaría destacar o reconocer?

Exacto. Los socios y sus equipos, voluntarios, consultores y la comunidad, en su conjunto, fueron la clave para lograr el alcance del proyecto. Mas que reconocer las partes, siento que el todo es lo que me gustaría reconocer ya que nos permitió vivir la experiencia de lo virtuoso que es el trabajo colaborativo. Por este proyecto pasaron muchas personas y varias de las que estuvieron en un principio fueron tomando otros rumbos, pero que dejaron trabajo importante que luego fuimos continuando otros. Por lo que me es difícil destacar algo por sobre otro.

[English] The Franklinia project has been an incredible collaborative effort. Which team members would you like to highlight or acknowledge?

Exactly. The partners and their teams, volunteers, consultants, and the community as a whole were the key to achieving the project’s scope. More than recognizing individual parts, I feel that it is the whole that I would like to acknowledge, since it allowed us to experience how powerful collaborative work can be. Many people were involved throughout this project, and several of those who were there at the beginning later moved on to other paths, but they left important work that others of us continued. That’s why it’s difficult for me to highlight one thing over another.

[Español] ¿Hay personas cuyas contribuciones fueron especialmente importantes para el éxito del protection?

Todas las personas fueron clave para el éxito. Ahora, desde un plano personal, la llegada de Gonzalo Rojas (viverista) fue un impulso realmente importante para fortalecer y sistematizar todo el trabajo que se venía desarrollando en viverización. Cada persona que pasó por el vivero dejó su huella, sin embargo, el soporte académico, pasión y carisma que trajo Gonzalo fue una dosis de motivación importante, sobre todo para la última fase del proyecto y posterior al cierre del proyecto.

[English] Are there people whose contributions were especially important to the project’s success?

All of the people were key to the project’s success. Now, on a personal level, the arrival of Gonzalo Rojas (nursery specialist) was a truly important boost to strengthen and systematize all the work that had been developing in nursery production. Every person who passed through the nursery left their mark; however, the academic support, passion, and charisma that Gonzalo brought provided an important dose of motivation—especially during the final phase of the project and after the project’s closure.

[Español] ¿Cuál es tu mayor esperanza para el futuro del bosque nativo en Juan Fernández?

Que la recuperación de la salud de los bosques se logre a través del desarrollo espiritual de su comunidad. Que el sentido de identidad de nuestra comuna se fortalezca restaurando nuestros bosques y cuidando nuestro ecosistema en general.

[English] What is your greatest hope for the future of the native forest in Juan Fernández?

That the restoration of the forests’ health be achieved through the spiritual development of its community. That the sense of identity within our municipality be strengthened by restoring our forests and caring for our ecosystem in general.

[Español] ¿Qué legado esperas que deje el proyecto Franklinia?

El valor del trabajo en equipo y el potencial sembrado a través de las distintas capacidades que se instalaron, tanto en infraestructura, equipo y por sobre todo experiencia. El proyecto Franklinia sienta las bases para un trabajo de restauración gradual entregando las herramientas necesario para hacerle frente a las diversas amenazas que el bosque de Jaun Fernández enfrenta hoy.

[English] What legacy do you hope the Franklinia project leaves behind?

The value of teamwork and the potential that has been sown through the various capacities that were established—in infrastructure, in the team, and above all, in experience. The Franklinia project lays the foundation for gradual restoration work, providing the necessary tools to confront the diverse threats that the Juan Fernández forest faces today.
