Meg Caldwell
Meg’s scholarship and philanthropic work integrates science and social equity to advance effective ocean and coastal ecosystem governance and implementation. She retired from the Packard Foundation in February 2025. There she spearheaded the Foundation’s strategy for ocean conservation and ocean-based climate solutions, worked with its General Counsel to develop the Foundation’s first human rights policy, and collaborated with experts globally to develop the United Nations Environment Programme Core Human Rights Principles for Private Conservation Organizations and Funders.
Prior to joining the Packard Foundation in 2015, Meg directed Stanford University’s Environmental and Natural Resources Law & Policy program for over 21 years and Stanford’s Center for Ocean Solutions since its founding in 2008.
Meg has devoted much of her professional life to public service, including serving on the Blue Ribbon Task Force for California’s Marine Life Protection Act Initiative (2004-2012), the California Coastal Commission, the California Coastal Conservancy Board, and numerous non-profit boards–including Oceans 5, Surfrider Foundation, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
