Larry Clark

Dr. Larry Clark is currently the principal and director of METIS, Ltd., a consulting enterprise in the area of applied biology and policy. Larry is recently retired as the director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Wildlife Research Center (2008-2019), where he also served as Assistant Director (2005-2008) and research scientist (1990-2005). Prior to his government service, Larry was on the faculty of the world renowned private research institute, the Monell Chemical Senses Center (1983-1990). Larry has degrees from the University of Maryland (BS), Northern Arizona University (MS), and the University of Pennsylvania (Ph.D.).While at Monell, Larry’s research focused on the adaptive use of plant-derived medicinally active chemicals by wild animals, the study of animal pain perception, molecular modeling of chemical irritants, and the design of animal repellents. Upon joining the USDA, Larry worked on the development of animal repellents, invasive species control, and wildlife disease issues. Larry has over 150 scientific publications, grants from NIH, NSF, DOD, and private research foundations, and has served as an adjunct faculty at Rutgers University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Colorado State University. Always interested in the applications of science, Larry has four licensed patents for animal repellents. Among the numerous honors and recognitions he has received, Larry is the recipient of the Kerry-Manheimer Award for career achievements in the chemosensory sciences. In recognition of his commitment to translational scientific efforts and leadership, Larry received the Federal Laboratory Consortium’s Laboratory Director of the Year Award for technology transfer in 2019, and was the recipient of a Presidential Rank Award, the highest civilian honor for a federal senior executive. He was also part of group efforts in developing the USDA’s Scientific integrity regulations and policy.
