Position Overview
The Assistant Project Manager for the Kawau project will support the Kawau Project Manager to deliver wallaby and possum eradication. The role requires:
- Leadership (good interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, problem solving, and team building)
- Technical project management skills (e.g. image collection and analysis, GIS mapping and data analysis, support with scheduling, risk management, permissions, contract management, reporting and decision making)
- Eradication experience (a working knowledge of eradication principles and the thinking required to achieve success, knowledge of compliance and local regulations)
The Assistant Project Manager may also support other IC or Partner led projects.
This is a fixed-term position for two years and requires extensive time based on Kawau Island. Applications close midnight, May 18th.
Essential Duties
The Assistant Project Manager will be involved in every component of the project life cycle. This role will be responsible for making sure the right work is done in the right way.

Duty: Leadership
Tasks Include:
- Assist the Kawau Project Manager with organization, leadership, and supervision of staff, contractors, and volunteers.
- Identifies, establishes and maintains relationships with partners, stakeholders, and communities instrumental to the successful implementation of projects and IC’s mission.
- Demonstrates and ensures a commitment to safe work practices.
- The Assistant Project Manager will exemplify gender equality, disability, and social inclusion principles in all decisions and interactions with work colleagues, local communities, and stakeholders
- Seeks and provides feedback to improve the effectiveness of work
- May include direct supervision of staff

Duty: Project Planning, Management, and Implementation
Tasks Include:
- Works with the Kawau Project Manager and partners to identify and secure the compliance requirements for project to proceed.
- Trail camera network maintenance, image processing and management.
- GIS mapping and data analysis.
- Assists with project planning and implementation
- Implements steps to establish and maintain the enabling conditions necessary for successful project implementation
- Assists with logistics of transporting project equipment and resources to Kawau Island.
- Assists with field duties including field-based eradication techniques, fencing, and other general tasks.
- Works with Community Liaison lead to plan upcoming hunting operations.
- Proactively identifies and communicates critical issues and risks to the project and ensures they are managed in collaboration with the Kawau Project Manager, project staff and partners.
- Ensures or directly compiles and analyzes data collected in the field, reports and summarizes data.
- Reports progress on deliverables, financial and non-financial indicators, risks and issues internally and as required by partners and funding sources.
- Complies with all relevant IC policies related to travel, financial approvals, purchasing and contracting, etc.
- Exemplifies gender equality, disability and social inclusion principles in all decisions and interactions with work colleagues, local communities and stakeholders.

Duty: Strategic Development and Innovation
Tasks Include:
- Contribute to regional and organizational strategy development
- Scans the external environment for information, trends, best practices and innovation
- Brings new ideas and opportunities forward for discussion
- Writes reports, scientific, popular articles, and presents based on project activities, and research and monitoring data

Duty: Organizational Integration
Tasks Include:
- Coordinates with ICEAT to ensure project quality
- Collaborates with Partnership team on partner engagement
- Collaborates with IC’s Innovation and Impact programs to ensure project scope is defined in alignment with IC’s strategic vision
- Collaborates with IC’s Partnership and Communications teams to maximize opportunities for Island Conservation’s mission
- Collaborates with Communications team share Island Conservation’s story
- Collaborates with other IC conservation staff to share and learn from successes and failures

Duty: Learning and Development
Tasks Include:
- Increasing skills and capacity through stretch assignments, formal training, and peer learning
- Completes required trainings as defined by the organization and project needs
- Supports the development of colleagues, direct reports and partners by providing training, sharing information about projects, etc.
- Sets and reports on goals as defined by organizational processes

Duty: Administration
Tasks Include:
- Completing tasks required to support the function of Island Conservation, including but not limited to timely submission of expense reports and time sheets
Additional Responsibilities
Flexibility Requirement: Approximately 10% of the duties and responsibilities may be adjusted based on the evolving needs of the supervisor and the organization. This may include carrying out tasks outside of or in addition to those outlined in the job description. This flexibility is essential to support a dynamic response to evolving priorities and objectives.
Qualifications
Essential
- Understanding of the principles of invasive species eradication
- Direct experience in pest control or conservation field work
- Knowledge and experience in the use of a variety of eradication tools and techniques
- Use and management of trail cameras and processing of imagery
- Experience and use of GIS and software
- Awareness of animal welfare standards and the permits and compliance requirements for the use of VTA’s and traps.
- Experience in project planning and delivery including scheduling, risk identification and mitigation, and procurement of contractors and equipment.
- Management of logistics
- Familiarity with working in remote and hazardous environments
- Comfortable working with diverse stakeholders
Desirable
- Knowledge of the biology and behaviour of possums and wallabies
