Island Conservation Organizational Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Principles
- Island Conservation envisions and strives to contribute to a world that is inclusive, interconnected, just, and sustainable. A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) is fundamental to all we do.
- We partner with a broad range of people and listen to and learn from many perspectives and practices, including diverse ways of understanding and interacting with the natural world.
- We are committed to a continuous diversity, equity, and inclusion learning journey that includes engagement, collective work, partnership, and acting with humility.
- It is critical in our DEI journey to acknowledge and learn about oppressive roots within conservation’s history and their current manifestations, and to foster justice in our work.
- Moving forward we will reflect, act, remove barriers, and foster inclusion and equity at the interpersonal, team, and organizational levels.
- DEI is the right thing to do. DEI is everyone’s responsibility.
Island Conservation worked with Ferdman Consulting and Praxis Consulting Group to engage board and staff in creating these DEI principles. Separate staff and board committees were created to work independently and together to engage in an organization-wide dialogue and discussion.
We acknowledge that our work on DEI is ongoing and requires constant attention, self-reflection, and external feedback to put the principles above into practice. We commit to using these principles to guide our engagement with communities, partners, volunteer leadership, and staff.
