U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Publishes Priority List for Restoration of Islands with Invasive Species
Restoring island habitat for native and endemic plants and animals by removing invasive species

On September 3, 2009, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service published an island restoration priority list online addressing the negative impacts of invasive species. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service owns or assists in the management of several thousand of the more than 13,000 islands under U.S. jurisdiction. Many of these islands are threatened by invasive species, which directly and indirectly impact native species, causing extinctions and extirpations which result in a loss of biodiversity.

To tackle this issue, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service prioritized islands where invasive species removal might have significant conservation benefits. The removal of invasive species from islands allows for the natural recovery of the ecosystem.

Learn more about the program and view the priority list here!

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, The Nature Conservancy, and Island Conservation are teaming up to restore Palmyra Atoll (one of the islands identified as a priortity) by removing invasive rats.
